King Solomon’s Mines Possibly Found in Jordan

A group of archeologists suppose that they have found in a mine in the deserted area in South Jordan the world famous King Solomon’s mines. Scientists working under the direction of American Thomas Levy of the University of San Diego, they did radio -carbon investigation into the mine Khirbat en-Nahas and found that in the era of King Solomon there had been extracted copper.

King Solomon is mentioned in the Old legacy as a wise ruler who according to legends has owned unusually rich gold mines. This story became world famous after it in 1885 in Britain published a bestseller of the same Henry Ryder Haggard “The mines of King Solomon. The heroes of the novel are searching for diamonds, gold and ivory.
However, the location of the biblical king was covered with secrecy. Levy noted that, while working on the one hand, is supposed to analyze scientific data on the other – to set to ancient texts. “We can’t believe everything ancient writings tell us. But this research represents a confluence between the archaeological and scientific data and the Bible.” he said.

Proper layering when going for a hike

In bitterly cold weather I wear several layers for going out hiking; I also cycle a lot and find that several thin layers are far more practical than one or two thicker ones. Generally, I will wear a lightweight sleeveless or short-sleeved thermal vest. Next to that I’ll wear a thin short-sleeved cotton t-shirt with a long-sleeved t-shirt on top of that. A jumper – preferably one made of real wool – will form the top layer with an outdoor Berghaus jacket on top, so, with the jacket, I wear five layers. In milder weather I’ll do without the first t-shirt but would never leave out the thermal vest because you never know when the temperature will drop.

For the lower half, in really cold weather, I’ll wear a pair of thick knitted tights with jeans or jogging bottoms on top, plus a pair of thick boot socks. Worn with proper leather hiking boots, they ensure that my legs and feet stay warm. I would never wear Wellington boots in such weather. Years ago, I assumed that, because Wellington boots were waterproof and ideal for wet weather, they would work in cold weather too. I found out the hard way one Guy Fawkes night when I attended a firework display that lasted for a few hours in freezing conditions and my feet just got colder and colder as the evening wore on. I now know that Wellingtons are only for keeping the rain off your feet.

It is very important to keep your head covered in very cold weather – we lose a great deal of body heat through our heads and wearing a hat is essential. These days you can buy thin cotton liners to wear inside a knitted of fleece hat. I wear a hat that also covers my ears because cold ears can be very painful, especially in windy weather. Ear warmers are available as well and these are very useful if your hat does not cover your ears. Similarly, gloves are also important and, again, you can buy thin cotton liners for these.

Wearing several thin layers rather than one or two thicker ones ensures that you remain comfortable and not restricted by heavy clothing.

Let Your Taste Buds Take You Back

Just this past week, one of our good friends in Italy commented to me that he felt one of the best ways to get to know a culture or a people is through their cuisine. I couldn’t agree more. In fact, when we travel, I make it a point to eat local delicacies… a full-blown parilla in Buenos Aires, tiritas in Zihuatanejo or geschnitzel mit roesti in Zurich. Mmmm… geshnitzel.

OK… my mind and taste buds are wandering. Anyway, he made a very good point. In fact, not only can you enjoy local cuisine while on a trip, you can bring that local cuisine home with you. For example, during our July trip to Zihuatanejo, I made it a point to pick up a 750 gr bag of sea salt for a mere 30 pesos. You read that right… 1 1/2 pounds of sea salt for about $3.00. While in Paris, we saw 1 kilo bags of fleur de sel French sea salt for under 2 Euros. To me, using food products from another country make it easy to relive memories from a trip over and over. Just this week, we started a meal by cracking open a jar of locally grown olives we purchased in Milos, Greece. Tonight, I seasoned a batch of broccolini with a bit of fleur de sel de Camargue purchased in France.

You get the picture… so, here are some of the culinary items we’ve purchased during some of our trips to spark some ideas on what to pick up on your next trip:

  • A jar of chimichurri herbs in Buenos Aires
  • Wine in Italy, Greece, Spain, Argentina and, yes, even Canada.
  • Local spirits like Nocino or Amaro d’Abruzzese in Italy and local rum in Gran Canaria
  • Chocolates in Switzerland, Belgium and in Bariloche, Argentina
  • Parmigiano in Italy
  • Shrimp seasoning in New Orleans
  • Maple syrup in Quebec
  • Lizano salsa in Costa Rica
  • Rosa mosqueta in Bariloche, Argentina
  • Oils in Italy and Spain
  • Red salsa mojo in Gran Canaria
  • Delicacies in the food halls at Harrod’s in London
  • Bricks of Lavazza espresso coffee in Italy

Seek out a local grocery store, take a look at various local products, particularly those that don’t look familiar and pick out a few to take home. Just make sure you’re not bringing back anything that might get you on the wrong side of customs. Soft cheeses, packages of prosciutto, foie gras, etc… a quick look a the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol page will shed some light on what can’t be brought back.

Great Beaches On Grand Bahama Island In The Bahamas

Quite naturally, one of the primary reasons the Bahamas have attracted visitors from all over the world is the abundance of beautiful beaches. Grand Bahama Island certainly has its share of these remarkable beaches, and as a beach vacation destination, this island rates as one of the best.

Xanadu Beach is a popular tourist destination located in Freeport. There are a variety of activities available, including water sports such as parasailing and beach sports such as volleyball. Because of the pleasant atmosphere, the beach also attracts a local crowd, in addition to tourists. This beach is not uncomfortably crowded, and although it attracts enough people to have an active social scene, it is large enough that there is room to enjoy a bit of solitude.

Taino Beach is the perfect place for those seeking the classic white sands beach experience, with all the traditional pastimes. It also has a small playground that is sure to please families with small children. Some of the best restaurants in the area are found in this area. Lucayan Beach is where tourist with an interest in active water sports go. Conveniently located across from the Port Lucaya hotels, it has a long and inviting sandy shoreline.

Gold Rock Beach is located in the Lucayan National Park and is simply gorgeous. It is about 25 miles from Freeport and is, despite its beautiful white sands on the edge of spectacularly blue waters, quiet and peaceful. Outdoor cooking facilities and picnic tables are available, making an all day visit an enjoyable event.

Mather Town Beach is an excellent place for those who enjoy meeting locals. The beach restaurant and bar Club Carib is located here, and is definitely worth a visit for its fine variety of reasonably priced, quality food. William’s Town Beach is another active beach, with water sports, including jet skis and snorkeling on the eastern side. Horseback riding along the beach is permitted here, and with the beautiful view, it is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, whether by foot or on horseback.

In addition to the many public beaches, there are also several private beaches where tourists can enjoy the sun and sand free from the distraction of the beach vendors that wander the public beaches hawking their wares and free of the crowds that sometimes fill those beaches during peak travel times. Many of the resorts offer excellent package deals that include private beach access and transportation to and from the beach. Some offer beachfront apartment rentals, perfect for families.
