A Quick Sojourn in Washington DC

So here I am, sitting in a Washington D.C. hotel room on a Sunday night. I don’t like business travel that starts/ends on a weekend but, in all fairness, our consultants do it all the time. I can handle it once in a blue moon.

I’m in town for a national conference and rather than staying at a $200+/night national chain (i.e. Hampton Inn, Marriott, Hilton, Embassy Suites, etc.), I opted for the Donovan House Hotel. The Donovan is the DC location of the small Thompson Hotel boutique chain. For $189.00/night, I landed a comfortable room in a stylish hotel that is a mere 10 minute walk from the convention center. $189.00 gets you plenty of space, access to a fitness center and you’re only a 10 minute walk from this…

Not bad.

Now, I took the super shuttle from BWI to Washington D.C. The cost was $37.00 compared to an estimated $85.00 taxi fare (W-O-W!). Waiting for the shuttle took about 20 minutes and then the ride was maybe 45 minutes long. Thankfully, I was the first stop.

After I checked in, I decided to do some walking… down Vermont to the White House, around the Treasury Building and over to the Ellipse. I thought about walking over to the Washington Monument but decided against it. I would walking further and further from the hotel and I wasn’t sure that I felt like it. So, I took a meandering route back to the hotel to where I would pick a place for dinner.

After a few searches on the Washington Post’s page, I opted for Luigi’s Famous Pizzeria. The editorial review was good enough and the restaurant was easy to find (about a five block walk), inexpensive (My total meal, with tip, was under $20.00) and apparently a Washington staple (in business since the 1940s). How was it? Pretty good… not great but good.

The restaurant had a inviting main dining room with a cozy atmosphere. The sunroom seating seemed a little cold to me and the upstairs room was larger and less cozy. To me, the main room was the spot. I started with a bell pepper bruschetta that wasn’t bad and it was only $2.50 for two pieces. The bread echoed what I had read from some reviews – it seemed kind of stale. If it wasn’t for the topping, it may not have been worth eating.

Nisei: Japanese Festival

By Ian Kleine

Nisei, in Nihonggo, means ‘second generation’ (‘ni’ meaning two, and ‘sei’ probably meaning generation). This month-long festival is held usually in August, with the main attractions heralding the first two weekends of the fest. Nisei Week draws the attention and the support of both Japanese and non-Japanese festival goers, due to its grand floats and parades, and the month long activities that soon follow. This 2009, the festival will be celebrating its 69th year.

The festival grounds of the Nisei festival is tremendous. Following the original structure of the Japanese matsuri (or festival), the streets are lined with booths that are filled with food, games, prizes and others. There was once a free-admission carnival and art show, but they were removed, and/or changed. Up 2006, an eating contest consisting of Japanese pot stickers or “gyoza” was added. The attraction was tremendous. Contestants each ate as much as nearing 200 or so.

The Tofu festival of Los Angeles was added. The festival was once a self-standing fest of sorts, but after the greater success of the tofu festival (beer was a factor that helped); it was now a festival that was held after the Nisei month.

They also have the Nikkei games, an open competition for everyone with running, martial arts and exhibitions. The Little Tokyo Anime Festival, another crowd bringer that spawns a massive amount of audience, most usually fans of Japanese animation (Girugamesh, anyone?). Cosplays and booths were comics are sold are usually rampant.

Ondo dancing, were people dance to the tune of a singer (sometimes lyrics being read off a magazine!) happen too. The choreographer has the dancers carry chochin lanterns as they will the night away, dancing in the streets. The audience can dance too, with little supervision as the dance is often times just easy to follow and easy for the bones. (Really!)

The Modern Invention of The Official Soccer Ball

By Gabriel Barkeley

Take the time to read the following article, surely you will benefit from the research that been conducted in order for it to be written.

In the popular game of soccer or football, the most important piece of equipment is obviously the ball. Before the modern invention of the official soccer ball, you should know that in the beginnings of the sport the ‘ball’ used was either a human head, a human or animal skull, an animal bladder, stitched up cloth, or an animal-skin ball. In medieval times, stories tell about animal bladders mostly, which, progressively started being covered with leather to maintain the shape better and for a longer time. It was only with Charles Goodyear who, in 1836 patented vulcanized rubber and in 1855 designed and created the first vulcanized rubber balls, that we can say we are getting closer to the shape of the official soccer ball of the modern times. Then, inflatable bladders started being produced in 1862, after H.J. Lindon invented them.

There are significant features to consider if we are to consider the official soccer ball chronologically. Periodically, the producer of the official ball changes, although the basic quality standards remain the same. Another aspect regarding the official soccer balls used in time is that of the manufacturing companies that have been entrusted to produce these items. Thus we ought to refer to Puma, Brine, Nike or Adidas that design soccer balls following the regulations and laws established by the international football organisms and associations (FIFA).

A first official soccer ball worth mentioning was Telstar, used in Mexico in 1970. Adidas started to produce soccer balls in 1963; they created the first official FIFA World Cup ball in 1970. It was the first ball that had 32 black and white panels and it was more easily noticeable on black and white televisions. Two Adidas soccer balls were afterwards launched in Germany, in 1974. Telstar appeared again but this time the gold branding was replaced by a black one. Then Adidas introduced a new all-black version of the official soccer ball called Adidas Chile, after an all-white ball previously tested in Chile in 1962.

What Fiji and its Islands Are Like

Fiji is located in the South Pacific Ocean east of Vanuatu. This country is composed of 322 islands. 106 of those islands are permanently inhabited. Along with that are 522 very small islands, also known as islets. The two major Fijian islands are Viti Levu (translated into Large Island) and Vanua Levu (also called Small Island) and they hold 87 percent of the population.

The climate of Fiji is tropical, of course. Therefore, it can get very humid because of the daily rainfall and plentiful sunshine. When visiting Fiji, sandals, sun hats, loose clothes and lots of bottles of sunscreen are often recommended items. One of the most popular aspects of Fiji is its beaches. The sand is usually filled with shells from when high tide went out and, just a few steps into the ocean, a person can instantly have their ankles surrounded by small fish.

The smaller islands are much of the same. Temperatures can either be hotter or cooler depending on the tree/shade cover on the island. One of the most popular summer beach games would probably be volleyball. Fijians will sometimes invite tourists into a game and share the entertainment of bouncing a ball over a net!

When visiting Fiji, there is one particular drink that a person should at least try. That drink is kava. Kava is an ancient crop of the western pacific. When this plant is made into a liquid, it creates a drink with anesthetic and sedative characteristics. A person will normally feel their lips, tongue and throat become slightly numb. The drink is also known to taste like dirty water.

Tarot Class at Groton, New York

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

Would you like to take a peek into the future? Are you amazed at how magicians or gypsies can predict and tell what your fate holds? Isn’t it exciting to even once- just try and have your plams read so you can see what’s in store for you? Really exciting and at the same time mysterious- these are the words that you used to describe fortune telling.

Fortune telling is an old art. it has been around since the Ancient times. It was the act of telling or predicting the future through palm reading or by the use of “mediums” such as tarot cards, crystal balls, candles, etc. Psychics areother names from which you also call the fortune tellers. Fortune tellers are often paid in predicitng people’s lives. Some people object in the concept of fortune tellers, saying that they are liars and that they are fakes. Hmm.

At Groton, New York a Tarot Class is featured where fortune tellers and card readers are present to teach the attendees on the basics of fortune telling. They are also there to read the future and the fate of the attendees. Many people, most especially women flock to this class so they could have their futures predicted.

A tarot enthusiast once told me that she does not really believe or follow the things that fortune tellers tell her during “readings”, although she still hire their services regularly. Why? She explained to me that she uses the “readings” in order to guide her through life but not merely follow the instructions. She says that she feels happy whenever a fortune teller tells her that something good is coming her way.

On a side note, going to fortune tellers is a good thing because it makes us focus on the thing sthat we want to happen in our lives. Just like in the book: The Secret, when you wan tsomething so badly in your life to happen you will do anything so that the universe will conspire to make it for you. In visiting fortune tellers, when they tell you of a good fortune, you unconsciously do everything to make it happen.

Beach Vacation Homes In Nicaragua

By June Able

Vacation Homes in Nicaragua are poised to be the hot buy of 2009. The Nicaragua real estate market has been maturing over the past decade and it is ready to explode. Baby boomers are getting set to retire and they have just started to discover Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is located in Central America where it is hugged by both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Historically associated with unrest, it is now associated with colorful villages, great surfing and beautiful beaches. Direct flights into Managua are available from a number of U.S. cities such as Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta and Houston. In the past six or seven years, the tourism industry in Nicaragua has experienced outstanding growth and the country’s infrastructure has seen a great deal of attention and investment.

Nicaragua has a great natural beauty and wonderful tourism related activities. Such activities include hiking or kayaking along fresh water lakes and rivers, world class surfing and sport fishing, volcano watching, exploring historic colonial cities, relaxing on one of the gorgeous beaches, shopping in the wonderful open air local markets or visiting a coffee plantation in the lush and green northern region.

Add to the mix an incredibly friendly population and Nicaragua’s rich and fascinating cultural history and it is suddenly no surprise that Nicaraguan property has become the hot buy amongst baby boomers looking for retirement homes or vacation homes, or seeking to diversify a real estate investment portfolio. In addition to the multiple benefits of owning Nicaragua property, you may also be eligible to receive some compelling tax incentives as an investor or developer under Nicaragua Law 306.

Title insurance is also available from some of the most reputable American title insurers, such as Stewart Title and First American Title, to further ensure your sound investment. Foreigner investors are entitled to hold fee simple title to Nicaragua property in their own names which is unlike some other Latin American countries.

Because the Nicaragua real estate market still remains relatively undiscovered, compared to other tropical markets such as Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico, many great deals can be had. Ocean side villas are still affordable here. And when you consider that the cost of living in Nicaragua, including food and health care and services is a fraction of that in North America, the argument for buying Nicaraguan Real Estate becomes even more attractive.

Different Traveling Methods

When thinking about long distance travel, a person will most likely turn to airplanes before other means of transportation. However, there are a few other ways that are other easily accessible and cheaper methods of getting around. Other transportation vehicles include cars, boats, trains and cruise ships.

For traveling outside of your country of residence, airplanes are usually the preferred standard. People like to travel by plane because it is fast, decently comfortable and, with thorough research, can be very affordable. These reasons are perfectly alright but, what if a person doesn’t want to travel quickly and would prefer to enjoy more of a leisurely “stroll”? That is where a cruise ship comes into play! When traveling on a cruise ship, the amount of time it will take to get your destination varies between four to fourteen days. The price of the trip could be a little high but the amounts can be between $32 per day to $63 per day.

Another method of transportation is to travel by train. Trains are used for in-country travel, not overseas. Traveling by train is considered to be a more classic way to go from one side of the country to the other. Trains have also become a lot more sophisticated than were before. Cabs now have plush booths, travelers can (most likely) admire beautiful scenery on their trip and, depending on how far you’re traveling, trains can be inexpensive and quick. One of the most popular train companies is Amtrak. Amtrak provides its customers with comfortable seats, a special food cab and a smooth, quiet ride. Tickets for this train can be $160, more or less. Travel time can be as little as 40 minutes or as long as 16 hours.
