Buffets in Fairs

By Ian Kleine

Let me tell, one nasty thing I hate about fairs and festivals are, you guessed it, the food.

Honestly, you see nothing good for your heart and for your tummy. We have many of them: the artery-blocking kinds, the lip-greasing kinds, the all-but-air-inside kinds, the you-know-it’s-junk kinds, or the if-it’s-not-junk-then-it’s-sugar kinds.

All for the benefit of being able eat it with your fingers or to just carry around in convenience. And you seriously don’t have much of an option in that matter.

I was once stuck with that type of menu when going to food fairs. You could see me lugging around a cheese-and-butter popcorn basket, a big sized coke in the other hand, some corn dogs and waffles inside the popcorn, and a large tuft of cotton candy in the back. Talk about gluttony. But festivals come only once in a year, so I took the opportunity to load myself up on the food.

Hah! Talk about carbohydrates, next day I gained 5 pounds right off the bat. Took me at least 2 weeks to rid myself of the extra fat. Right now, I’m exercising self-control when I go to fairs and festivals.

One summer fest, I chanced upon a buffet booth. They had seats (a highly attractive sight when going fair-diving) so I indulged myself to it. The buffet was nice, as the menu consisted of almost everything made out of protein. Not just meat, but tofu, eggs, the usual salad and some pasta. Plates were handed out after paying and I dined with much enthusiasm. It was heavenly, complete with fireflies in the nearby orchard.

Calculating everything I spent, I had saved at least HALF of what I usually spent with the popcorn and the soda and the cotton candy and all that fat stuff. Talk about good for the heart, the tummy and your money!

When going out to fairs and festivals, make sure to look for a buffet table. It is highly inexpensive and heavy on the stomach. This helps when you’re cutting down on unnecessary fat and keeps your appetite satiated for the whole time you are staying inside the fair.
