Eating can be one of the biggest expenses of any vacation. Just think about it for a moment: you travel for seven days and, maybe aside from the continental breakfast at your hotel, you are eating at least two meals in a restaurant every day. You can easily spend $15 per person per meal, which adds up to $210 per person per week!
It makes good sense to cut your eating costs if you are looking to travel on a budget. You’ve got to eat, so how can you eat cheaply? Even better, how can you eat for free? We’ve found the answers! Here are several great ways that you can eat for free while on vacation:
Look for Happy Hours
There is a bar or pub in virtually every city you will travel to. Many of these places will offer free food during their happy hours. If you plan on drinking anyway, head to the bar when you can couple your cocktail with a free meal. If you don’t drink alcohol, this obviously won’t work, but, if you do, it’s a great way to score free food.
Food at the Hotel
When you are booking your hotel, look for one that offers a complimentary breakfast. Continental breakfasts typically consist of cereal, muffins, bagels, juice and coffee, and can be a great way to fill up before you head out for the day. Some mid-range hotels offer free breakfast buffets, which are even better!
Some hotel chains have begun to offer free snacks and appetizers in the evening for their guests as well. If you can find one of these, you may be able to eat for free twice every day, which can add up to huge savings.
Airline Travel
No one likes waiting in the airport when his or her plane is missed or delayed, but this can be a great way to have a free meal. If your plane is delayed for an extended period of time, head to the help desk and ask for a meal voucher. Most airlines will be happy to hand one over.
It’s not necessary to miss your plane to get a free meal at the airport. If you fly first or business class, or have racked up the airline miles, you can gain access to the airline’s lounge. These lounges often offer snacks and beverages to their guests for free.
Hospitality Bars at Hotels
If the hotel you are staying in has a hospitality bar, you can often have a bowl of soup or light snack for free.
