Are you heading to your next destination via plane? No one likes flying – the process is always long and draining. You can use these five tips to make things as easy as possible:
- Ship your possessions rather than taking a checked bag.
If you can, it makes sense to pack a carry-on instead of having a checked bag so you can by-pass the ticket counter and baggage claim (and, in many cases, cheaper). However, if you just have too much stuff to take with you on the plan, consider shipping a box to the hotel where you’ll be staying. Often, you can save money this way, and you don’t have to worry about struggling through the airport with an extra bag.
- Sit where you can see the flight information at the gate.
Flight departure gates and times change often, and sometimes, these changes aren’t announced. As you’re waiting to board, sit where you can see the screen or board with this information (it should be near the desk where you give your ticket to board) and check it often so you’re aware of any delays or gate changes.
- Bring your own snacks.
While you can’t carry drinks past security, you can bring snacks as long as they aren’t liquid-based. Crackers, trail mix, and cookies can easily be packed in your carry-on so you don’t have to wait in line and pay high prices at the airport food stands.
- Smile.
Gate agents and flight attendants deal with angry customers all day. When you get to the ticket counter with a problem or question, remember your manners. After all, it isn’t that person’s fault that there are delays or cancellations. By saying please and thank you and having a friendly smile on your face, you’ll get better service because the worker will want to help you. Even when things are impossible, when you are friendly and polite, they suddenly figure out your travel problems with an awesome solution that you wouldn’t have otherwise been offered. This trick has saved me at airports more times than I can count!
- Embrace technology.
Lastly, when possible, emrace technologies that airlines and airports are adapting to make travel easier. Most airlines allow you to virtually check in up to 24 hours in advance, which allows you to skip the ticket counter. Some have mobile check-in options, so you don’t even have to print a ticket. It can be scary to try something new when you’re used to the old process of managing your way through an airport, but give these new technologies a try. They can make your travel a lot easier.
