How to Make Time Fly on Long Haul Flights

Flying across continents and oceans is the fastest way to travel, but it still means that you will have to spend considerable periods cooped up inside an airplane. A couple of hours in a plane is not an issue for many people, but extend that time to 8 hours or more, and then you might face problems. It is especially difficult for people who cannot afford business class or first class – which applies to many! I have flown my share of long haul flights, and I have been lucky to have had things and activities loosely planned so as to stave off boredom. Here are some of my tried and tested ways to make time fly during long flights.

Sleep!

This is rather easy for me, as I love my sleep! Some of my closest friends have this insidery joke about me being able to sleep practically anywhere, in any position. If you are the same, then you will be able to while away many hours sleeping in the plane. If, however, you do not fall asleep easily, you can consider not getting enough sleep before the flight. This way, your body will be forced to get some rest while you are tens of thousands of miles up in the air.

Bring a book.

Whether it is a book made of real paper or an eBook, it does not matter. Long flights are perfect for catching up on your reading. Think about the book that you have been wanting to read but never had time for. Wouldn’t reading it be an excellent way to kill time?

Be sociable.

This one’s a little tricky, but if you have the right personality for it and if you are lucky enough, you just might experience the best human interaction ever. Open yourself to the idea of engaging your seatmate/s in conversation. Gauge the person/s beside you to see if they are open to conversation as well. If the elements are right, you won’t notice how long the flight is, and you might even make a friend or two!

Watch movies.

If you are not the reading type, then you always have the option of watching movies. Depending on your carrier, you might have on-board entertainment options. If you are like me, however, you will always have a gadget with you. Whether it’s a laptop or a tablet, the gadget can save your sanity. Make sure you have your device/s fully charged and loaded with media that you enjoy. Depending on the length of your flight, you can spend the entire time watching movies, playing games, and listening to music.

On any long car journey, there are several things that can go wrong, so it’s worth remembering that it makes sense to ensure you have a few items that can make the trip a completely successful one. Whether you’re travelling from Penzance to Aberdeen or from New York to Los Angeles, you can make sure the experience is enjoyable and stress-free.

Perhaps most important of all, the humble sat-nav system is now a standard requirement for those that have them. By entering a few details into the unit, it’s possible to have clear instructions about the best way to get to your destination. While some cars have them already fitted, it’s also possible to buy an external one from any online retailer.

Never get lost again

Without a sat-nav, it would be so easy to get lost. Finding yourself in an unfamiliar location without being able to find a way out can add precious time to your journey, and will also serve to increase the tension of the driver and any passengers that are on board. For just a few pounds, this can all be averted easily.

Although you may plan your trip to avoid all the usual traffic blackspots, incidents can and do happen. And when they do, you could find yourself marooned in the car for several hours without actually moving. In such an event, you may be grateful that you had some food in the vehicle, even if it was only a packet of toffees.

Fend off the boredom

It might also be a good idea to make sure you have something to read in the vehicle, just to help you pass the time away. If you’ve ever been stuck for a long time and found a crumpled old newspaper or magazine under the driver’s seat, you’ll know how welcome it was to have something that could take your mind off the terrible queues.

Needless to say, if an emergency occurs it’s always best to be prepared. Therefore, your mobile phone should be a must-have for any car journey, even the shortest ones. You never know when something might happen, so it should give you peace of mind to know you can at least contact the outside world at any time.

For long trips, it’s always a good idea to have a supply of water, oil and windscreen washer fluid in the boot. The need for essential maintenance may be needed at any time, and you may find you’re a long way from a garage.
