How to Plan an Affordable Summer Vacation with Your Teens

Summer time is here! And with it comes a lot of excitement from those who are lucky enough to have a break. Of course, as a parent, it is likely that your summer “vacation” is more about working overtime to care for kids who are at home from school while still handling your normal day to day responsibilities than it is about relaxing. That means you need a break, too. Do yourself and your restless school-free teens a favor by packing up and heading out on a family summer vacation. Think it will cost too much to take your rowdy bunch away for a while? Think again. Here are some great tips for how to plan an affordable summer vacation with your teens:

Set a budget. It’s only natural that your teens will want some spending money while you are on vacation. Just remember that a little bit here and there can add up fast. For that reason, you need to set a budget BEFORE you even embark on your journey, and you need to make your teens aware of it. If they want extra money, give them the option of working a summer job to stash cash before the big departure date.

Thrifty vacation ideas. Teens are old enough to enjoy things that younger children can’t. One great vacation idea for families with teens is book rooms on a cruise ship. Believe it or not, you can find summer cruise specials for incredibly low prices – much lower than the Disney vacation option – and what’s more is that cruises are generally all-inclusive, meaning you won’t have to come out of pocket for food and entertainment while on board. Also, consider renting an inexpensive timeshare on a beach. Teens are generally happy to wander around and find their own entertainment, so you may be able to do a family vacation on the cheap simply by renting a beach-front cottage and letting your teens loose.

Save on food. Sure, teens love food . . . but not necessarily the kind that comes with five-star ratings. You can save a lot of money on your vacation by skimping on the fancy dinners out and instead opting for fast and easy meals that your teens can cook wherever you are staying. Even fast food is cheaper than a seat at a nice restaurant, and most teens will tell you that they’d rather have a burger than escargot.

How to Save Money on a Cruise

Going on a cruise vacation is one of the most relaxing and exciting things you can do.  But many people never go on cruises because they don’t think they can afford it.  Surprisingly, the cost of this sea vacation is very much within reach for the average family, but there are also hidden fees that you need to worry about.  Here are a few tips on saving as much money as possible on your cruise ship and some sage advice on how to make sure you don’t waste your money on something you don’t really need.

I already mentioned the fees.  Most of these are mandatory so there is really not much you can do about it.  But one of the biggest money makers for cruise lines is the drinks.  And I’m not just talking about alcohol.  Drinks like sodas, smoothies, and other specialty drinks will all cost you extra.  But you don’t have to spend ANY extra money on a cruise ship if you don’t want to.

For a single bottle of water you can pay as much as $4.  Many people don’t realize that the water that comes out of your sink in your stateroom goes through a very advance filtration process and is absolutely fine to drink.  But if you are really paranoid about tap water you can just bring your own case of water or soda onto the ship itself.  Just have the staff bring it to your room as luggage.  And yes, the cruise lines allow you to do this so you are not breaking any rules here.  But always ask ahead of time anyway, in case the rules have changed.

Keeping your phone off during the cruise will also help a lot since data costs can be astronomical.  Just wait until you get to one of the islands to use your phone.  If you leave your phone on then you can still receive text messages and each one will rack up on your bill.  Some people have had cell phone bills exceed $10,000 from just one trip.  Yes, this is a little extreme, but why take the chance, right?

Unless you are feeling very lucky, then you should probably avoid the casino as well.  Some people will spend hours in this place, losing all of their money.  But if your goal is to save money, you don’t need to be flirting with this kind of temptation.  After all, there are tons of other FREE things to do on the boat.

Hiring a Minibus for a Holiday Club

Running a holiday club can be an excellent way for teachers and other school staff to earn a bit of extra money during the school vacations, and it’s not hard to think of exciting activities to get the young people engaged. The best option is to have a trip booked as part of the week’s entertainment, possibly as a final day celebration or as a way of expanding the children’s horizons. This comes with its own set of problems, from raising the money to pay for entrance fees and travel to completing the necessary risk assessment paperwork. This article aims to give some pointers about hiring a minibus as transport for the trip.

Firstly, see if there are any minibus companies that are attached to the local council for use by youth groups. This might not ensure the cheapest price, but the vetting of the company will have been done already, and you don’t need to worry about have to get a criminal background check done on the driver. However, during school holiday time, there will be dozens of other holiday clubs running, so you may run into competition for locally approved services.

The next step to try is to call the local high schools a few weeks in advance. They are often very keen to make contact with their feeder primary schools, and will do what they can to help out. Because they go on so many trips and sports fixtures, they tend to have several minibuses and staff who are trained to drive them. By explaining what you’re doing, and proposing some sort of link with the high school (possibly going up and using their facilities during the holidays), you’re likely to be able to hire their minibus for free. Again, this relies on a number of factors to work, not least whether the staff who are qualified to drive are available.

If that fails, get a list of local minibus companies who will recognize the name of the school that you work for. This will hopefully make them a little bit more sympathetic to your cause, and you may be able to negotiate a discount with them. They may also have a connection to the school. Be sure to remember to ask for a background check, and if the company baulks at that, then don’t hire them. When transporting children, all drivers must be able to display a clean police check, and should already have one in place for their job.
