Emigrating is a huge step and a decision very carefully made. As some people do it with an optimistic view, others feel it is necessity to make this move.
- Preparation time.
Emigrating is no sudden decision and planning has to take place over a period of least 18 months to two years. There are a lot of aspects such as legal documentation, financial planning and personal risks involved. Moving your household to another country is a serious topic and one which may take some members of the family time to grow accustomed to. A move to an area that would cause serious culture differences can have a huge affect on people, which can lead to depression and unstable family relationships.
- Elements from your house
Clean breaks always sound nice when making a huge move such as emigrating. Once you’re in that foreign country you’ll start missing some elements of your house “back home”. It is always a good idea to drag along an old favorite couch, portrait or maybe the dining table you and your friends had your last dinner party together at, with all those scratches and stains. These elements are consistent, and will get you through those times of loneliness and doubt. Its sentimental value will also increase during those times.
- Don’t burn bridges
When leaving a country such as South Africa, don’t bad mouth it. If you had some bad experiences here, get over it, because you will miss your home country even if it’s hard to admit. Don’t tell everyone in the new country how bad it is and then, after a few months go visit friends and family in South Africa. As an emerging country you might be proud one day. Another important aspect is to leave this country with peace in your heart, just to avoid stress.
Also ensure you give someone you trust general power of attorney to deal with legal matters on your behalf, with all bridges burned this can be a problem.
- With a clear conscience you can now make new friends, easy
It is hard to start over, especially where no one looks familiar and they are not in need of any friends. You have to try harder just because you’re new, to get their attention, still be yourself. If you don’t like someone don’t be friends, just because you feel sorry for them. Friends are actually people you want to spend time with.
