We all know that travel insurance is vitally important if you are going on holiday – be it for a long weekend, an overnight trip or even a 3 month cruise. But knowing what your insurance covers, and how much cover you need, can be tricky.
We all know that direct travel insurance covers any hospital costs that may occur while we are on holiday. We never plan on being taken ill or getting injured while on holiday, but if we do our travel insurance is there to cover our medical expenses.
Travel insurance also covers such events as your baggage being lost or any personal items being lost or stolen while you are out enjoying yourself. Any money that you have on you or have in your hotel room is also covered. Travel insurance also covers you incase you cannot take your holiday, for example if you have to cancel it because of illness, injury or death of a close relative. It also covers you incase you have to cut your holiday short because of these. Travel insurance policies also cover you incase your flight is delayed or cancelled.
A very useful extra that many travel insurance companies offer is personal liability cover. This covers you if you injure someone, or their property, whilst you are on holiday. This is an exceptionally useful add on if you are planning on hiring a car or bike while on holiday.
When it comes to how much travel insurance cover you need it does depend upon your personal circumstances. If you have pre existing medical conditions it is often worth buying your insurance through a broker, who will make sure you are covered to the level you need. If you haven’t got a pre existing condition there is a general level of insurance you should look to be covered up to. This includes £1m of emergency medical cover within Europe and £2m if you are going elsewhere, in particular the USA. On top of this you should have £1,000 for baggage and personal belongings and £200 to £500 for stolen or lost cash including traveller’s cheques.
