5 Travel Necessities

As an adult, traveling isn’t as easy as it used to be – there’s everything from coordinating vacation days to remember to change money to realizing that you forgot the sunblock. But there are always those things that you absolutely cannot travel without.

Just take a minute and think of the things that you need when you travel – what sticks out in your head, whether it’s gadgets or walking shoes? These are the things that I know I need when I travel – what about you?

Camera

As I’ve gotten to travel more extensively, I don’t necessarily break out my camera as often as I used to – I prefer to enjoy the moment – but there are always those things that you are going to want to photograph.

If you don’t have the photograph, you know that in ten years time when you’re trying to explain to your kids how much of an awesome time you had in Rome you just aren’t going to be able to come up with the right words.

They say “an image is worth a thousand words” for a reason. So, long story short, when you’re traveling it’s pretty important to bring along a camera – film, digital, point and shoot, professional or even just your camera phone.

It’s capturing the memory of the experience that matters.

Universal Adapter

In the ever-burgeoning world of technology, nobody goes far without some sort of gadget in tow. But you’re not going to be able to use the same plug for the wall socket everywhere you go – and you can’t always guarantee that one country is going to have the same kind of outlet – sometimes they have one or two different plugs within the same country!

Which is why you want to save yourself the headache and get a universal adapter. For the good ones that you can really use in just about any country, you’ll probably be spending about $50 – but if you’re someone who travels frequently the investment is worth it.

Who wants to worry about an additional two or three pounds of stuff just to make sure that your technology works in that country anyway? Just do away with the hassle and have one. (And then, especially if you bring your computer that has the third grounding prong, you’re probably going to want to bring a converter to make that two-pronged as well).

Light Luggage

Especially these days where airlines are charging an arm and a leg if you have additional pounds on your luggage – learn to pack lean and mean. Don’t pack 5 pairs of shoes when 2 will do.

6 Incredible National Parks on the Australian East Coast

Australia is a very beautiful country with a lot of incredible natural beauty to attract tourists. Visitors from around the world, along with the locals are amazed at how much the landscape can change in just a few short hours of driving. Thankfully some of the most spectacular places of natural beauty are being preserved and managed as national parks. The East Coast of Australia offers enormous diversity in national parks and reservations and each one offers a unique experience. The following is a list of just six of the many incredible national parks on Australia’s spectacular East coast.

  1. Northern Tablelands National Parks. Bald Rock, the most famous attraction of the park, is made of granite with a height of over 1277 meters. Stanthorpe Adamellite would be the exact name of the material that has made this giant so unique, a type of granite that is very rare and thus precious. It tends to erode in very intricate ways, making for a spectacular view for the average visitor.
Girraween National Park in Queensland is one of the neighboring attractions and together they form a really interesting duo. This particular spot offers a lot of excellent options for hikers, with its 11,800 heactares of land, bring your walking shoes and a picnic for a great day out.
  2. Riverina National Parks. If you have had enough of the mountain hiking you may want to try a more relaxing experience. The Riverina National Parks – made up of Cocoparra, Willandra and River Red Gums national parks all offer camping, bush walking, lookouts and wildlife watching. Spring is the best time to enjoy both the flora and fauna, you can find grey kangaroos, koalas, emus, Kingfishers and even barking owls, so bring your binoculars and your camera.
  3. Royal National Park. This is a must see attraction for more than just its beautiful scenery and the beaches and all the other amenities that you would expect from a sea side reservation. What makes this place unique is the history here, the fact that it was set up as a national park in 1879 and is therefore second oldest national park in the world. This National Park, just a short drive South of Sydney, offers a range of activites both on the land and in the water. Here you can take long bush walks, rent kayaks, camp, mountain bike, horse ride or take a dip in one of the many pristine beaches.
  4. Bunderoo National Park. This smaller national park has another great opportunity for any visitor. It is set only 5 kilometers from Jamberoo (and not far from the Jamberoo Recreation Park) and 99km South West of Sydney.

Closed shoes or open sandals on your family walk in the country?

Scared of going to the countryside with your little ones? Don’t be – all you need is the right pair of walking shoes and a bit of enthusiasm to make your trip safe and enjoyable! The only sensible choice when it comes to walking shoes (and especially for climbing) are closed shoes which offer the optimum amount of protection for the foot, as well as being better in terms of  their defenses against external wetness and dampness. It’s especially crucial for children who can be less careful on the track. One of the great pleasures of walking is to tramp through countryside and woods, stride over cliff paths, climb up hills and saunter down dales. In short, it’s about variety. Awkward terrain, rugged terrain, smooth terrain and all shades in between deliver breathtaking views, scents, sounds and what many passionate walkers will say is an incomparable experience of just being alive.

These are the people, passionate and dedicated in their hobby, who will be prepared for all weather, especially when walking within the UK where most of the ravishingly beautiful places, like Devon, Cornwall, Norfolk, Wales, Scotland and the Lake District are not necessarily known for their clement weather. The South West’s Maritime Climate can be a particular challenge.

It’s fair to say that it’s lucky that UK walkers love variety so much because they certainly encounter weather conditions of all shades, which can then transform to something different even before you’ve adjusted your mountain equipment jacket. Now, to give this question the attention it deserves, we have to consider not just the different physical environments through which we amble, but also the differing weather conditions which add colour to our journey.

Clearly, a trek made in baking hot sunshine will not be anything like the same experience when that same route is followed in the driving rain. There are a lot of permutations to consider and it’s doubtful that any one type of walking shoe will meet absolutely all of your needs absolutely all of the time. It is more likely that, on balance of your previous walking experiences, you will opt for a multi-purpose, all-terrain kind of shoe, which to my mind will likely be a closed version.
