New York City is a place to see regardless of the weather, but the winter is a particularly magical time, especially if you get there in the month of December (warning – it will be incredibly busy) when the Christmas and holiday decorations make the city come alive. If you are planning on moving to NYC, don’t forget to check out these Movers New York City.
Holiday Displays
New York City is known for great holiday displays all over the city from the tallest skyscrapers and retail stores to parks and open areas (what few of them there are). Take a walk down 5th or Madison Ave and enjoy how decked out the stores are.
One of the more famous holiday displays in NYC is at Macy’s flagship store, but some others to check out include:
- Bergdorf Goodman
- Lord & Taylor
- Bloomingdale’s
- Saks Fifth Avenue
It’s not just all about the store front decoration, either – one of the most famous New York holidays displays is the massive Christmas Tree (and the tree lighting ceremony) at Rockefeller Plaza.
Of course, even if you’re not a 5-year-old, you’re going to want to take a tour ’round FAO Schwarz to look at all the amazing toys, and perhaps have a go on the massive piano.
Ice Skating
Yes, you can go ice skating in New York City – also at Rockefeller Plaza, actually. Imagine skating in the greatest city in the world under the lights of a massive Christmas tree. It’s pretty spectacular.
There are a number of other less busy skate rinks around Manhattan and the boroughs, but if you’re looking for a real New York City experience it’d have to be Rockefeller Plaza.
Musicals
No, it’s not just Broadway that I’m talking about during the holiday season in New York City. It’s the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall! I remember going as a young girl and really enjoying the experience. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is a mash up of the Nutcracker and just general holiday experiences, characterized by the famous Rockettes and their kick-lines.
If you want to go see a Broadway play, of course, there is nothing stopping you from doing so, either. While some of the classic plays are no longer on Broadway (Les Mis, Cats, etc) there are always a new batch of interesting and popular Broadway showings.
If you want to get day-of tickets to a Broadway show, I would highly recommend checking out the offerings at TKTS in Times Square – though you may have to wait in line for a bit.
These are just a few things that New York City has to offer in the cooler months – why not head over to the Big Apple this winter and see for yourself?
Amy is a freelance writer who loves musicals and music in general, as well as New York City. She hopes that you check out a Broadway play or two – why not check out the Book of Mormon ticket selection, or see if there are tickets for the Lion King? Broadway has so much to offer for everyone’s taste!
